Boston Globe reporter Martin Finucane writes that MIT researchers have developed a new way to fabricate tiny objects. “The researchers are currently able to create objects that are around 1 cubic millimeter, with features as small as 50 nanometers,” Finucane explains. “The tiny structures could be useful in fields from optics to medicine to robotics.”
MIT researchers have developed a new technique that can shrink objects to the nanoscale using a laser, reports Lauren Kent for CNN. Kent explains that the technology “could be applied to anything from developing smaller microscope and cell phone lenses to creating tiny robots that improve everyday life.”

Catalog, an MIT startup that creates systems to store data on synthetic DNA molecules, hopes to make a commercial DNA storage product in the next year, reports Hiawatha Bray for The Boston Globe. Using this new form of data storage, “can shrink down entire data centers into shoeboxes of DNA,” says former MIT postdoc and Catalog CEO Hyunjun Park.

60 Minutes correspondent Bill Whitaker sits down with Prof. Feng Zhang, “a scientist at the center of the CRISPR craze,” to help explain how the gene-editing tool works and its potential. “There are about 6,000 or more diseases that are caused by faulty genes,” says Zhang. “The hope is that we will be able to address most if not all of them.”
Led by Prof. Tim Lu, Senti Biosciences has received $53 million in venture capital funding to launch their startup that will focus on cancer therapies, writes Jonathan Shieber for TechCrunch. Ideally, these therapies “are able to be controlled (programmed) at the cellular level and respond to conditions in a variety of ways,” Shieber explains.
MIT researchers have “discovered a slight difference in how humans produce the building blocks of DNA compared to how bacteria does it,” writes Fiona McMillan for Forbes. The comparison of human and bacterial enzymes “bodes well for the possible development of new antibiotics,” explains McMillan.
