Reuters Video visits MIT to learn more about how researchers have developed a new robot, dubbed Jackal, which can navigate pedestrian traffic. Graduate student Michael Everett explains that the robot was designed to operate, “just like people do, so [it] fits in with the flow of traffic.”

Fortune reporter David Morris writes that MIT researchers have tricked an artificial intelligence system into thinking that a photo of a machine gun was a helicopter. Morris explains that, “the research points towards potential vulnerabilities in the systems behind technology like self-driving cars, automated security screening systems, or facial-recognition tools.”

In an article for The Wall Street Journal, Visiting Lecturer Irving Wladawsky-Berger spotlights MIT’s AI and the Future of Work Conference. Wladawsky-Berger writes that participants, “generally agreed that AI will have a major impact on jobs and the very nature of work. But, for the most part, they viewed AI as mostly augmenting rather than replacing human capabilities.”

Abigail Beall of New Scientist writes that MIT researchers have developed an algorithm that can trick an AI system, highlighting potential weaknesses in new image-recognition technologies used in everything from self-driving cars to facial recognition systems. “If a driverless car failed to spot a pedestrian or a security camera misidentified a gun the consequences could be incredibly serious.”

CSAIL researchers have tricked a machine-learning algorithm into misidentifying an object, reports Louise Matsakis for Wired. The research, “demonstrates that attackers could potentially create adversarial examples that can trip up commercial AI systems,” explains Matsakis.

CSAIL researchers have discovered that some traffic jams are caused by tailgating, writes Thomas Tamblyn for HuffPost. Maintaining an equal distance in front of and behind a vehicle, “could have a dramatic effect in reducing travel time and fuel consumption without having to build more roads or make other changes to infrastructure,” explains Prof. Berthold Horn.

Research engineer Bryan Reimer speaks with Ashley Halsey of The Washington Post about the need for a national conversation to determine how safe driverless cars should be before they become more widely available. “Unless we have defined how safe is safe enough — and we are in agreement — the nature of politics is that fingers will point at each other,” says Reimer.

A recent passenger trial by nuTonomy in Boston, “is perhaps a promising move for companies hoping to bring self-driving vehicles to the state,” writes Enwemeka.

MIT spinoff Optimus Ride will be bringing autonomous vehicles to a new development in South Weymouth, reports Adam Vaccaro for The Boston Globe. The company is currently running tests in the streets, “but it expects to haul passengers around the development site as part of a pilot program at some point in 2018,” writes Vaccaro.

Researchers at MIT will begin studying how Boston-area drivers interact with driver assistance systems, reports Aarian Marshall for Wired. Research Engineer Bryan Reimer explains that he and his colleagues hope to gain a better understanding for how, “driving is beginning to transform from one where the human has primary oversight responsibility to one where the human is actively engaged in a robotic interaction with the vehicle.” 

CBS Boston

As part of HUBweek, more than two dozen robots were publicly displayed at City Hall Plaza reports Kim Tunnicliffe for CBS Boston. The “robot block party” featured an autonomous vehicle petting zoo, which included “self-driving vehicles created by nuTonomy, Optimus Ride, Delphi and a collaboration between Toyota and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.”

Writing for the Associated Press about autonomous boats, Matt O’Brien spotlights Prof. Carlo Ratti’s work developing self-navigating vessels that will launch in Amsterdam next year. O’Brien notes that Ratti is, “also looking at ways small vessels could coordinate with each other in ‘swarms.’”

MIT researchers have developed a new “socially aware” robot that can follow the rules of pedestrian conduct, reports Ben Thompson for The Boston Globe. Thompson explains that the robot, “can seamlessly move with people in public spaces. The technology could eventually lead to robots that perform a variety of delivery and transportation tasks.”

Research engineer Bryan Reimer speaks with Chuck Tannert of Fast Company about the need for more investment in technology that can help make cars safer. “It is clear that safety on the nation’s roads is in question, necessitating a review of investments to double down on what is working and innovate where needed,” Reimer explains.

MIT researchers have developed a system that allows drones to scan and read RFID tags, reports Amy Wallace for UPI. Rather than use the drones to carry RFID readers, researchers found a way to use “the drones to relay signals emitted by a standard RFID reader, allowing for the more effective locating of tags,” writes Wallace.
