Rafael Reif explains that the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing “will constitute both a global centre for computing research and education, and an intellectual foundry for powerful new AI tools.”
The New York Times writes about the new MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing, calling MIT’s move “a particularly ambitious step.” President Reif says the College will “educate the bilinguals of the future,” people in fields like biology, chemistry, politics, history, and linguistics who are also skilled in the techniques of modern computing that can be applied to them.
Boeing plans to open a research center in a new building being developed as part of MIT’s Kendall Square Initiative, reports Katrina Lewis and Julie Johnsson for Bloomberg News. Johnsson and Lewis explain that, “the center will support research for Boeing NeXt, an initiative aimed at a new wave of flying technologies.”
Boston Business Journal reporter Catherine Carlock writes that Boeing will come to Kendall Square to develop a new autonomous flight research center. Boeing is the first major tenant announced as part of MIT’s Kendall Square Initiative. Provost Martin Schmidt explains that Boeing’s presence in Kendall Square, “will create an unprecedented opportunity for new synergies in this industry.”

“One of the biggest names in aerospace is coming to MIT’s front door,” writes Boston Globe reporter Tim Logan, explaining that Boeing will lease space in one of the buildings MIT is developing in Kendall Square. “We want to bring corporate partners to the edge of our campus to facilitate stronger and deeper interactions with our community,” says Provost Martin Schmidt.
The Boston Globe highlights some of the notable speakers who will deliver remarks at commencements across New England in the coming weeks, including Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, who will speak at MIT’s ceremony.
AI leader SenseTime is the first company to join the MIT Intelligence Quest since its launch, writes Xinhua editor Xiang Bo. “As the largest provider of AI algorithms in China, we are very excited to work with MIT to lead global AI research into the next frontier,” said Xu Li, CEO of SenseTime.
NBC Boston reports that ICE has released MIT custodian Francisco Rodriguez. “Many members of the MIT community have strongly supported that Francisco be released from detention to be with his family so the news of his release is extremely welcome. We also strongly believe Francisco should be allowed to remain in the U.S. permanently," according to a statement from MIT.
Bryan Marquard of The Boston Globe writes about the legacy of Paul Gray, the 14th president of MIT, who died at 85 and was known for his efforts to increase diversity at MIT. Gray was a “transformative administrator who enrolled at MIT as an electrical engineering student in 1950 and retired in 1997 as chairman of the MIT Corporation, the institute’s governing body,” writes Marquard.
Prof. Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of the School of Engineering, speaks with Meera Vankipuram of The Times of India about his research, his areas of focus as dean and what sets MIT apart. Chandrakasan explains that at MIT, there is an “emphasis on translating research into solutions that have a positive impact on the world.”
MIT custodian Francisco Rodriguez, who has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), wrote a letter to The Boston Globe explaining that his family needs him. “I believe in this country,” writes Rodriguez. “I believe in what people can do here.”
Writing for The Boston Globe, Tim Logan writes that MIT filed a mixed-use zoning petition for the 14-acre Volpe site in Kendall Square. Logan notes that the Volpe redevelopment is part of a broader push by MIT to make Kendall Square, “feel more like a fully-fledged neighborhood.”
During a panel discussion held during Times Higher Education’s (THE) World Reputation Forum, Provost Martin Schmidt spoke about the need for universities to relay the value and importance of their work to the public, writes Jon Marcus for THE. “It’s on us to basically frame that in a way that is comprehensible and digestible,” Schmidt explained.
