Energy alumni named top young innovators

Two MIT energy alumni were named top “Innovators under 35” by MIT Technology Review. The alums, Miles Barr SM '08 PhD '12 and Sarah Kearney SM '12, are now part of a legacy of innovators named annually by the magazine, such as Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Miles Barr is the cofounder of Ubiquitous Energy, which is developing transparent solar cells to be used to power e-readers, smartphones and tables – and maybe one day whole buildings. Barr was also named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Energy & Industry list earlier this year. Learn more about the research behind his company.

Sarah Kearney is the founder of the nonprofit Prime Coalition, which helps private foundations invest in energy-related startups. Prize money from a 2012 Women in Clean Energy award, supported by the MIT Energy Initiative, helped Kearney hit the ground running during the early days of starting Prime. Learn more about Kearney’s road to starting Prime.

This year’s honorees will be featured online on the Technology Review's webpage, and in the September/October print magazine, which hits newsstands on September 2. They will appear in person at the upcoming EmTech MIT conference from September 23-25.
