MIT discounts available for use of Zipcar

MIT has become a corporate affiliate of Zipcar, allowing discounts for MIT employees and graduate students who become members of the Zipcar service.

There are three dedicated Zipcar spaces for pickup, dropoff and parking in areas near campus: 50 Main St. (Deacon Street lot), Tech Square in the parking garage on the corner of Broadway and Portland Street, and 282R Vassar St. (Westgate lot).

Zipcars can be reserved for as little as an hour at a time. Fees are $4.50 per hour and 40 cents per mile, including gas and insurance. The maximum daily rate is $50 per day, which includes 125 free miles.

Employees and graduate students who join will become part of the MIT affiliate account and receive discounts on registration and annual fees, paying a $50 annual membership fee (normally $75) and a one-time application fee of $15 (normally $25). All users must also pay a $300 refundable security deposit. For departmental accounts that bill to the department, the deposit is waived.

For more information and a list of all 37 car sites in the Boston area, go to http://www.zipcar.com or call (617) 995-4231.
