Mathematics awards go to six

The Department of Mathematics bestowed honors on six students.

The Jon A. Bucsela Prize in Mathematics, given in recognition of distinguished scholastic achievement, professional promise and enthusiasm for mathematics, went to three seniors: Amit Khetan of Troy, MI; Eric Kuo of Trafford, PA; and Vivek Mohta of Northville, MI. The prize was created as a memorial by the parents of Mr. Bucsela, a member of the class of 1984 from Atlanta, who died as a result of congenital heart problems during his senior year.

Peter Dodds of Nhill, Australia and Dana Pascovici of Bucharest, Romania received the Housman Graduate Student Teaching Award. The award, given to graduate students in mathematics for skill and dedication in undergraduate teaching, is supported by the Charles L. and Holly Housman Fund.

Catalin Zara of Suceava, Romania received the Charles W. and Jennifer C. Johnson Prize for an outstanding research paper accepted in a major journal by a graduate student in mathematics, established by the support of Charles (BE 1955) and Jennifer Johnson. Mr. Zara co-authored a paper with Professor Victor Guillemin entitled "Equivariant deRham Theory and Graphs" which was published in the March 1999 issue of the Asian Journal of Mathematics.
