Inside Higher Ed’s Emma Whitford spotlights a new report by MIT’s Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning, and Research Training that offers recommendations for how AI should be used in education. “Learning works when it’s both challenging and social; knowledge is built through cognitive friction, whether that’s disentangling the steps of a mathematical proof with your study group, adjusting an experiment over and over until it works, or having a spirited argument with a peer (rather than getting ‘the’ answer from AI),” the committee writes.

"For decades, the U.S. has prospered from a 'brain gain,' attracting talented students from around the world. Graduate students who entered the U.S. on student visas,” writes Kaiser, "have bolstered the American economy.” He adds: "the research phase of a Ph.D. requires students to move beyond known material and to produce something new — to push past what today’s textbooks already include. That sort of innovation rarely happens overnight. The benefits, however, can shape generations.”

MassLive’s Juliet Schulman-Hall covers a new report from the MIT Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning and Research Training about AI and education at MIT. “It’s rare that a successful institution has to take a fresh look at many aspects of its mission,” said President Sally Kornbluth in a letter to the community. “But I’m convinced that the opportunities and risks generative AI poses for our model of education and research now constitute such a watershed for MIT — and for all of higher education.”

Alumni Erin Dawicki MBA ‘24 and Michelle Ewy MBA ‘24 speak to Boston 25 about developing LymeAlert, the first at-home test kit to detect Lyme disease in ticks. “The faster you treat it [Lyme disease], the way easier it is to treat and have complete resolution of symptoms for a lot of people,” says Dawicki. “But the second challenge is the current diagnostics we have miss 64 to 78 percent of early-stage cases.”

MIT students and community members spoke with 7 News Boston about their experiences viewing Wednesday’s partial solar eclipse, using the Unistellar eVscope Two, a smart telescope provided by the MIT Astrogazers, an outreach group largely made up of MIT graduate students. “To be able to see this celestial event in a way that’s so approachable, and the way that everybody in the community can enjoy it, especially when you have the right gear, is a really special opportunity,” says Joe Diaz, program manager and STEAM educator at the MIT Media Lab.

As the moon began to obscure portions of the sun during a partial solar eclipse, the MIT Astrogazers, an outreach group of MIT graduate students, brought telescopes to Kendall Square and offered passersby the opportunity to view the celestial showcase, reports Jay Willett for WBZ News Radio. “This is a Unistellar eVscope Two, so it can take the image that falls on that sensor, and project it to an iPad, another tablet, a smartphone, or even the eyepiece itself,” explained alumnus and Astrogazer, David DePalma ‘26. Graduate student Sydney Jenkins shared: “We’re trying to show everyone what the eclipse looks like, but safely.”

Smithsonian Magazine’s Kristen A. Schmitt spotlights LymeAlert, an at-home screening kit to detect Lyme disease in ticks created by alumna Erin Dawicki MBA ‘24. Once we figured out how to do this, it almost felt like a moral obligation,” says Dawicki. “We have the ability to get this out into the world, and it can become a pretty affordable way to try and prevent as many of these cases of long-term Lyme as we can.”

Fortune reporter Emma Burleigh spotlights MIT’s financial aid programs that provides free tuition to students whose parents earn less than $200,000 a year. Additionally, tuition, housing, dining, fees, books, and personal expenses for students with parental incomes of less than $100,000 are covered by MIT. “Famed research university MIT is not only footing the tuition bill of its lower-income students—it’s making ‘free college’ a reality,” writes Burleigh.

Chronicle of Philanthropy reporter Maria Di Mento spotlights how the creation of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing allowed MIT to develop new “interdisciplinary programs to prepare students for an AI-saturated world and help them understand the social and ethical implications of digital technologies.” Prof. Daniel Huttenlocher, dean of the Schwarzman College of Computing, explains that: “MIT realized that effective education in the age of AI has to look different than it has in the past. Traditional siloing of expertise won’t work when AI is expected to touch nearly every part of people’s lives and is changing the way people in disciplines outside of computing are advancing their work.”

For Scientific American’s special section “The Young American Scientists,” Prof. Feng Zhang speaks with Tara Haelle about the importance of investing in science and education, noting that “American science has long been the strongest engine of discovery and innovation in the world.” Zhang shares: “I’m fortunate to work with extraordinary students and postdocs, but the infrastructure that lets them do their best work is under real stress: funding instability..., immigration uncertainty for international scientists and an erosion of public trust in expertise. We can lose the lead rapidly if we do not protect our innovation ecosystem.”
