The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) voted MIT senior Tori Wuthrich to the Academic All-America Division III Volleyball Second Team as announced by the association on Tuesday. A repeat All-District selection, this is her first appearance on the national list while the Engineers extended their streak to four consecutive years with at least one award winner.
Wuthrich, a libero, finished the year with 505 digs, which ranked second in the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and seventh all-time at MIT. Her 4.35 digs per set mark is sixth in the conference and in the Cardinal and Gray’s record book while her tally of 1,393 career digs is also sixth on the Engineers’ list. Wuthrich had a 0.925 reception percentage while contributing to a defense that caused opponents to hit 0.113. She helped the women's volleyball team compile a record of 30-4 and advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. A two-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team honoree, Wuthrich was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference first team, the American Volleyball Coaches Association New England All-Region Team, and the New England Women’s Volleyball Association All-New England second team this year.
Majoring in aerospace engineering, Wuthrich was a member of a team at the 2015 Unified Engineering Flight Competition that designed and built a multipurpose remote control aircraft to complete both a speed and payload mission. Interning at Northrup Grumman, she was a propulsion engineer in the aerospace systems vehicle integration unit as well as a systems engineer with its information systems integrated air and missile defense department. On campus, Wuthrich is conducting research in the MIT Space Propulsion Laboratory in addition to being a member of the MIT Society of Women Engineers.
MIT is the all-time Division III leader in producing Academic All-Americas and ranks third across all NCAA divisions with 237 honors. In addition, the women’s volleyball program stands second with 20 selections as it trails Nebraska on the list.
