Stephen C. Graves — the Abraham J. Siegel Professor of Management Science and a professor of engineering systems and mechanical engineering — has been named interim director of the MIT Engineering Systems Division (ESD), effective Sept. 1, School of Engineering Dean Ian Waitz announced Monday.
Graves succeeds Joseph Sussman, the JR East Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Systems, in leading ESD.
ESD, founded in 1998, takes an interdisciplinary approach to solving complex, sociotechnical challenges. Its researchers combine engineering techniques with management and social sciences to tackle problems ranging from providing affordable health care to rebuilding aging infrastructure and managing global supply chains.
Graves joined the MIT Sloan School of Management faculty in 1977 after receiving a BA and MBA from Dartmouth College and a PhD in operations research from the University of Rochester. He is a leading expert in the design and planning of manufacturing systems and supply chains, including supply-chain optimization, and the evaluation of manufacturing flexibility and various tactical issues associated with online retail.
Graves has previously served as Sloan’s deputy dean and as the co-director of both the MIT Leaders for Manufacturing Program (now the Leaders for Global Operations program) and the System Design and Management program. He has also served as chair of the MIT faculty and is a faculty fellow of the Singapore-MIT Alliance.
“Professor Graves has a very strong record of leadership and service at MIT,” Waitz wrote in an announcement to the ESD community. “I know that ESD will be in very good hands.”
