Popular Science reporter Andrew Paul writes that a team of astronomers, including MIT scientists, has been studying a black hole dubbed Ansky that is in the process of waking up. Paul notes that what the researchers have documented "challenges prevailing theories about black hole lifecycles.” Graduate student Joheen Chakraborty explains: “The bursts of X-rays from Ansky are ten times longer and ten times more luminous than what we see from a typical QPE. Each of these eruptions is releasing a hundred times more energy than we have seen elsewhere. Ansky’s eruptions also show the longest cadence ever observed, of about 4.5 days.”

Astronomers from MIT and other institutions have discovered a “supermassive black hole that appears to be ‘waking up’ after being inactive for decades,” reports Soo Kim for Newsweek. “The black hole at the heart of SDSS1335+0728—a distant galaxy 300 million light-years away—was found to have produced flashes of light known as quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs),” Kim explains, adding that the “the bursts of X-rays from Ansky were found to be 10 times longer and 10 times more luminous than what we see from a typical QPE.”

Astronomers from MIT and other institutions have discovered a “population of previously hidden galaxies that could shake up astrophysics,” reports Ian Randall for Newsweek. “If confirmed, this new population would effectively break all of our current models of galaxy numbers and evolution,” says graduate student Thomas Varnish.

Lifelong learning supported by nondegree/certificate opportunities is essential for people to stay current, explore other avenues and have the opportunity to grow as individuals. The nondegree space is mandatory for these times.”

Syntis Bio, a biopharmaceutical company co-founded by Prof. Giovanni Traverso and Prof. Robert Langer, is developing a daily obesity pill that mimics the effects of gastric bypass, reports Emily Mullin for Wired. “This material is something you would take as a capsule or liquid, but the next day it's gone because of the natural turnover of our mucosal surface in the GI tract,” says Traverso.

Researchers at MIT have concluded that AI does not develop “value systems” over time, reports Kyle Wiggers for TechCrunch. “For me, my biggest takeaway from doing all this research is to now have an understanding of models as not really being systems that have some sort of stable, coherent set of beliefs and preferences,” says graduate student Stephen Casper. “Instead, they are imitators deep down who do all sorts of confabulation and say all sorts of frivolous things.”

Deborah Blum, director of the Knight Science Journalism Program, writes for The New York Times about the history and future of food safety programs in the U.S. “The United States clearly still needs the safety systems that were so painstakingly built over the last 120 years, and to make them better and stronger,” writes Blum. “The labs and scientists and inspection teams that have been recently lost should not only be restored but expanded. And the mistakes of the 19th century should stay firmly in the history books.”

A study by MIT researchers finds “using scrubbers to treat exhaust from heavy fuel oil may offer environmental performance on par with, and in some areas superior to, burning low-sulfur fuels in maritime shipping,” reports Hassan Ahmed for Engineeringness. “The research provides data that could help policymakers and industry leaders better assess the comparative costs and benefits of available fuel options,” explains Ahmed.

Researchers from MIT and Harvard Medical School produced two new papers about the impact of a specific cytokine, or immune molecule, known as IL-17, on the brain when you’re sick. “Cytokines are well-known players in the immune response, helping to control inflammation and coordinate the responses of other immune cells,” reports Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News. “A growing body of evidence suggests that some cytokines also influence the brain, leading to behavioral changes during illness.”

Writing for The Hill, Prof. Fiona Murray and Sloan Lecturer Gene Keselman underscore the importance of investment in U.S. universities, noting that the “traditional contributions of universities — advancing knowledge through research and patents — remain fundamental to America’s economic and national security dynamism.” An MIT program called Proto Ventures is building on this tradition, by turning “breakthroughs made in tech labs into real-world solutions that can help all Americans.” They note that: “By bridging the gap between groundbreaking research and tangible outcomes, universities can address their critics, strengthen the nation and focus on their highest purpose: advancing human progress through knowledge and innovation,” they write.

Graduate students Chuck Downing and Zhichu Ren PhD '24 highlight the potential uses of AI in the research process, reports Amanda Heidt for Nature. “I didn’t know much going in, but I learnt quite a bit, and so I use these deep dives all the time now,” says Downing on using deep-research tools when approaching unfamiliar topics. “It’s better than anything else I’ve used so far at finding good papers and in presenting the information in a way that I can easily understand.”

Military & Aerospace Electronics

MIT researchers have made a key advance in the creating a practical quantum computer by demonstrating “remote entanglement—an essential step in building distributed quantum networks—by sending photons between two quantum processors,” reports Military & Aerospace Electronics. “This breakthrough lays the groundwork for large-scale quantum computing networks and could extend to other quantum computing platforms and the quantum internet.”
