Prof. Sherry Turkle speaks to Scientific American’s Brianne Kane about her forthcoming book, “Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines.” “Social media got us into the attention economy, but chatbots are more toxic because they’re coming after the attachment economy,” says Turkle. “They’re coming after who you think you love, who you think you can count on, what you think empathy is.”

MIT researchers have created a microscope that can image electrical activity in neurons across the brain, writes Earth.com’s Eric Ralls. “We can now ask: Which neurons respond first?” says Zeguan Wang, first author on the study. “Where does a sequence begin, and how does activity spread to recruit the rest of the network?”

In a video, Visiting Scholar Ariel Ekblaw speaks to NBC News about floating, magnetic tiles that could be used to build structures in space. “We could self-assemble these [tiles] on the Moon,” says Ekblaw. “We could make habitats for the Artemis program. Once we have this idea of modular space tiles, there’s so many different things that we can do with self-assembly.”

In a Scientific American article by reporter Joseph Howlett, Prof. Naomi Sweeting discusses the potential pitfalls of consulting artificial intelligence in mathematics. “I view math as part of a vast and beautiful human project,” says Sweeting. “It's this huge endeavor that puts us in communication with thousands of years of human thinking.”

Sloan Senior Lecturer Jonathan Ruane joins Carmel Crimmins, host of Reuters’ “Econ World,” to discuss the future of quantum computing. “By 2035 I would not be surprised if you’re seeing some elements of the economy—whether that be firms within drug research for example, using, for certain applications, quantum computers as part of their overall process,” says Ruane.

MIT researchers have discovered that peptides can remain stable and form into, reports Earth.com’s Eric Ralls. “First, we were astounded that peptides remain stable at all in concentrated sulfuric acid, for many weeks on end,” says Prof. Mei Hong, an author on the study. “Even more remarkable was that they adopt specific three-dimensional structures instead of random shapes.” 

New Scientist

Prof. Sherry Turkle’s latest book “Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines,” is highlighted as one of the best new science books of September 2026 by New Scientist’s Liz Else. In her new book, Turkle explores how machines “are producing a generation more alienated, depressed and lonely than ever – and less equipped to reverse course, as machine relationships offer no practice for getting along with people,” writes Else.

Prof. Susan Solomon joins Cleo Abram’s “HUGE* If True,” to discuss her 1985 research uncovering how chlorofluorocarbons, were depleting the ozone layer, which led to the Montreal Protocol that banned the use of those chemicals. “It was an interesting feeling being under the ozone hole, knowing that half a world away an incredible change [the Montreal Protocol] had just occurred that really had a lot of potential to change things in the future—and indeed it did,” says Solomon.
