The New York Times

MIT researchers are leading a new project documenting what major AI systems say about elections in an effort to understand how the technology influences the democratic process, writes Tiffany Hsu for The New York Times. “AI is becoming part of the way people encounter and make sense of political information, and yet we know relatively little about what that information environment actually looks like, how it differs for different user demographics, political identities and geographies,” says Prof. Chara Podimata, a leader of the project.  

Quacquarelli Symonds

The MIT Sloan School of Management’s MBA program is ranked No. 1 in Quacquarelli Symonds’ 2027 list of Global MBA offerings, write reporters Louie Brand and Mustafa Mitashar. “U.S. business schools dominate the very top of the table,” note Brand and Mitashar. MIT Sloan “also leads employability with [a score of] 98.6.”  

Scientific American

The 2003 Cohn-Elkies method “for finding upper bounds on the density of sphere packings,” established by MIT Prof. Henry Cohn and Harvard University’s Noam Elkies, is highlighted by Jack Murtagh for the Scientific American. “Their recipe is almost mechanical: come up with a mathematical function, feed the function into their method, and an upper bound pops out,” writes Murtagh. “They provided the field with a machine: identify the right inputs, churn it through their method, and a breakthrough in sphere packing might emerge.” 

CNBC

Prof. Gary Gensler joins CNBC’s “Squawk Box” to discuss the AI race and shares his suggestions for government regulations. “I do feel that there’s a need for more responsible regulation of artificial intelligence,” says Gensler. “These existential risks [conflicts of interest, explainability, and bias], however you measure them, are much harder to control because you’ve got the competition between Chinese model developers, [and] U.S. model developers.”

A new paper co-authored by Prof. Anna Stansbury examines how socioeconomic differences can impact first-generation college students after graduation, writes Noam Scheiber for The New York Times. Stansbury and her colleagues found that having a parent with a graduate degree reflected a “generalized socioeconomic advantage.” Growing up affluent often “helps you learn how to read between the lines in certain situations, because you’ve been in similar kinds of situations,” Stansbury explains. 

Fox News

Prof. Daniel Huttenlocher, dean of MIT’s Schwarzman College of Computing, joins Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” to discuss his views on the role of human responsibility in AI’s evolution. “With conventional software, when you program something, you give the machine precise instructions of what to do, so the humans developing it have a much more concrete understanding of what it can and can’t do,” says Huttenlocher. “With an AI system instead, it’s learned much more general skills and what you tell it to do is achieve some sort of a goal, but you don’t tell it the specific way it should achieve that goal. We can’t control it [AI] in the same ways that we control traditional software, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t control it and that we can’t control it, it’s just different.”

Prof. Shafi Goldwasser and Prof. Vinod Vaikuntanathan founded the Institute for Responsible Superintelligence (RESI), “to develop mathematical principles and protocols to ensure AI models behave as intended,” writes Aaron Pressman for The Boston Globe. “You patch them [AI models] up, you test them, you patch them to make sure that they can perform to the best ability, but also not do damage,” says Goldwasser. “That’s probably not enough attention, given the fact that these things are going to become what we call super intelligent.”

New York Times reporter Quinn Glabicki highlights Coastal Assembly, an MIT spinout that uses AI, satellite and ocean current data to monitor communities threatened by coastal erosion and create underwater structures to regrow beaches at nearly 900 coastal sites. “We can go to any community around the world and understand what has happened and then propose a solution that is very precisely tailored to them,” says Prof. Skylar Tibbits, one of Coastal Assembly’s founders.  

Fortune

In his latest book, “Disposable Workers: The Transformation of Employment,” Prof. Emeritus Paul Osterman finds that 35% of the U.S. workforce is made up of disposable workers hired with the “implicit understanding that they won’t be around for long,” writes Fortune’s Nick Lichtenberg. Employers “do not invest in the great bulk of their workforce” in the way that they used to, says Osterman.

Mayor Michelle Wu has appointed Emily Knight, president and CEO of The Engine as Boston’s next economic development chief, writes Shirley Leung for The Boston Globe. “Real estate and economic development are so deeply connected that building those relationships is absolutely a priority for me,” says Knight.

Prof. Kristin Forbes speaks to Associated Press reporter Christopher Rugaber about the continued impact of the Iran war on oil and gas prices in the U.S.. “I don't see any end to the war in Iran right now,” says Forbes. “Given what everyone has been through in the last few years of high inflation, consumers are more sensitive, companies are more sensitive, they raise prices faster ... The risks are much more on more persistent inflation than it falling quickly.”

Members of MassLive’s “25 Most Influential Innovators of 2026” list, which includes President Sally Kornbluth and a number of other MIT faculty and alumni, gathered at the MIT Museum to “discuss the forces shaping the future of innovation in Massachusetts,” writes reporter Tréa Lavery. “MIT Provost Anantha Chandrakasan said about half of undergraduate students at the school are studying some form of computing, and enrollment in those courses has gone up in recent years, prompting professors and administrators to rethink how they incorporate AI into their teaching,” writes Lavery.
