The Research University in the Digital Age

Lawrence S. Bacow will speak on “The Research University in the Digital Age” on Monday, April 22 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Dining Room 5 at the MIT Faculty Club. The event is open to the MIT community.

Online learning is changing undergraduate education. Many predict that the lecture will cease to exist as faculty "flip their classrooms." As online education improves, colleges and universities will be under increasing pressure to justify the value added by the residential experience. The lecture will explore the consequences of all of this for the research university.

Bacow served as the 12th president of Tufts University from Sept. 2001 through July 2011. During his ten years as president, he advanced the university's role as a leader in teaching, research and public service. Within Tufts, he championed academic excellence and placed a premium on open communication and close engagement with students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The annual Charles L. Miller Lecture is co-sponsored by the MIT Engineering Systems Division and the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
