Copytech makes it easy to order your print jobs online

Copytech, MIT's print and copy facility, provides a range of online printing options, from large-format color posters to MIT business cards — and they deliver.

It's cold out there. Wouldn't it be nice if you could order a set of MIT business cards or invitations to your holiday party from the comfort of your desk? And then have them delivered to your office?

Well, MIT Copytech is at your service. The Institute’s print and copy facility provides a range of online printing options, from large-format color posters to multiple copies of your annual report. And they do deliver.

The System Behind the Scenes

Ordering online printing through Copytech is a multi-step process, but the bottom line is this: if you have a file and know the details of your print job — such as size, quantity, and type of paper — you can submit your digital files electronically.

Copytech’s online printing system runs on WebCRD, a browser-based ordering and production application. It provides automatic PDF creation, online proofing, cost estimates, and email notifications.

The Copytech website details the types of jobs you can submit, along with pricing, and provides the information you need to get started. Here’s a quick take on what kinds of project files you can send their way.

Brochures, Booklets, Flyers and Photocopies: You can place online orders for a range of print communications, from a basic black-and-white flyer to an eye-catching four-color brochure. Copytech offers a selection of paper stocks and sizes and can walk you through their options. For copy jobs, Copytech has state-of-the-art, black-and-white and color copiers that produce crisp, clean prints. In addition to submitting copy jobs electronically, you can use the black-and-white copiers in Copytech’s three locations. The cost is 5 cents per copy.

Large-Format Printing: Copytech can print large-format, full-color posters up to 42 inches in width and almost any length. Paper choices include a heavy-duty coated bond and a semi-gloss photographic stock. You can also request foam core mounting and lamination, as well as frame and trim options.

Business Cards: To order official MIT business cards online, complete and submit Copytech’s Official MIT Business Card Order Form using the free Adobe Reader application. Copytech can also print MIT student business cards or customized cards. For all business cards, Copytech uses premium card stock in white or natural. You can place an order for 100, 250, 500 or 1000 cards, and even order two-sided cards for an additional fee.

Infinite Display: If you want to display your message on digital signage, Copytech has that covered too. Chances are you’ve seen the widescreen displays on the Infinite Corridor and in the Student Center.

You can send content for the Infinite Display (in .jpg or .png formats) through an online submission form. Copytech provide file guidelines and design tips on their website, along with templates.

One tip to keep in mind: since designing for widescreen displays is similar to designing for prints with a landscape orientation, there’s a good chance you can use the same design for both.

Guiding the Way

Copytech’s Online Printing page has a bulleted overview, as well as links to a Quick Start page and a detailed PDF of the WebCRD system. You can also select Start your job and Get a printing quote from the Online Printing page.

If you’re unsure of which options to choose when using Copytech’s online print system, send your questions via their Contact Us page or give them a call at: 617.253.2806. They can step you through the process while you’re at your desk.

At the Ready

Copytech offers fast turnaround, even on high-volume jobs. Most jobs are ready in 24 hours, though jobs submitted at the end of the day may take an extra day to deliver.

While Copytech is primed to take your print, copy or digital signage orders online, Steve Dimond, manager of the Copy Technology Centers, notes that his staff is happy to work with community members over the phone or in person. In addition to consulting on online printing, they can help you design graphics for many formats and media and advise you on using unfamiliar software.

If you prefer to get advice in person, you’re welcome to stop by any of Copytech's three locations. Hours are: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
