Voyager 35th anniversary

On Sept. 5, 1977, the Voyager 1 probe — a spacecraft designed to study the outer Solar System and interstellar medium — was launched from Cape Canaveral. Now, 35 years later and more than 17.9 billion kilometers away, it is the farthest man-made object from the Earth.

From 2-5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, MIT's Voyager plasma science team is holding a reunion at the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research to celebrate the anniversary. The MIT community is invited to attend several free, public events, including:
  • 2-3 p.m. — Panel Discussion: Engineering and Operations 1977-2012
  • 3:30-4:30 p.m. — Panel Discussion: Science from 1977 to 2012
