The Burchard Scholars program offers up to 30 outstanding students a chance to expand their intellectual and social horizons every year. Scholars meet once a month with MIT faculty for a dinner, a research presentation by a professor or visiting scholar, and stimulating discussion.
Recent Burchard evenings have included presentations about China's rise, research on empathy, learning, and theory of mind; and a backstage visit with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Symphony Hall. "Last year's program was an absolutely wonderful experience for our Burchard Scholars," said SHASS Dean Deborah Fitzgerald. "And we envision another exciting and memorable series this year."
All MIT sophomores and juniors in good standing are eligible to apply; no preference is given to HASS majors. Applicants must have a reference from a HASS faculty member, and professors are invited to encourage promising students to apply.
