MIT puts Cambridge 1st

The 13th annual Cambridge First Day at MIT will celebrate the Cambridge Food Pantry Network's contributions to the health and dignity of the residents of Cambridge in a presentation on Tuesday, June 7, in the Stratton Student Center at MIT at 11 a.m.

The MIT Office of Government and Community Relations and the City of Cambridge Department of Human Service Programs are jointly hosting the 2005 celebration of community partnerships in Cambridge.

Sarah Gallop, co-director of the Office of Government and Community Relations, who plans the event, commented, "These 13 organizations are truly unsung heroes in our community. They quietly go about their work of helping families and individuals in need, not expecting to be recognized or rewarded for their efforts. We are so pleased to have the opportunity to honor them--on National Hunger Awareness Day--for the vital services that they provide."

National Hunger Awareness Day is a day set aside to encourage individuals to work together to fight hunger in their communities.

Cambridge Mayor Michael A. Sullivan, Cambridge City Manager Robert W. Healy and Chairman of the MIT Corporation Dana G. Mead will preside over the ceremony.

Each member of the Cambridge Food Pantry Network will be honored with a framed 2005 Cambridge First Day Award and a bound Cambridge City Council resolution. In addition, Mead (MIT Ph.D. 1967) will present a $6,500 check from MIT to the Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee, which oversees the Cambridge Food Pantry Network, to be distributed among the 13 honorees.

Network members are:

  • Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee Inc. Food Pantry (CEOC)
  • Cambridge Senior Center Food Pantry
  • CommonCare, a ministry of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church
  • East End House Inc.
  • Food for Free Committee Inc.

  • Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church Food Pantry (Elderly, Parents, Infant and Children program)
  • St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church Food Pantry

Speakers will include Sullivan, Healy, Mead and CEOC Director Elaine DeRosa. An informal buffet lunch will follow the awards ceremony.
