NAE elects several from MIT

Of the 74 new US members of the National Academy of Engineering , 20 have MIT connections. They include four MIT faculty members, a research affiliate, 16 alumni and two former professors.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice" and those who have demonstrated "unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology."

New members currently affiliated with MIT are:

Professor Berthold K.P. Horn (S.M. 1970, Ph.D.) of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), who was recognized for "contributions to computer vision, including the recovery of three-dimensional geometry from image intensities."

Klavs F. Jensen, the Lammot du Pont Professor of Chemical Engineering and a professor of materials science and engineering, for "fundamental contributions to multi-scale chemical reaction engineering with important applications in microelectronic materials processing and microreactor technology."

James C. Keck , the Ford Professor of Engineering Emeritus and a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering , for "developing innovative, widely used new concepts for modeling coupled chemical and physical phenomena in engine combustion and high-temperature flows."

Subra Suresh (Sc.D. 1981), professor and head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering , for "development of mechanical behavior theory and experiment for advanced materials and applications, and for demonstrating fruitful new avenues for structural study."

Richard M. Stallman , a research affiliate in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and president and founder of the Free Software Foundation Inc. in Boston, for "starting the GNU project, which produced influential, nonproprietary software tools, and for founding the free software movement."
