Engine unveiled

A donated CFM-56 airplane engine is unveiled at a March 31 ceremony in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The nonworking engine, which is used on Airbus planes, is partly disassembled for educational purposes and will reside in the Learning Laboratory for Complex Systems in Building 33. The engine was donated by manufacturer CFM International, a collaborative venture of General Electric and Snecma Moteurs of France created by the late Gerhard Neumann. He and his family have been major contributors to MIT aero/astro efforts. Left to right: Stephanie Randall, daughter of Gerhard Neumann; Professor Edward Crawley, head of aeronautics and astronautics; Jean-Pierre Conjan of Snecma Moteurs; Bill Clapper of CFMI; and Gerald Laviec, president and CEO of CFMI.
