The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) honored students and faculty members in the department for achievements in 2000-01.
Five graduate students received teaching honors. The Carlton E. Tucker Teaching Award was presented to Stark Draper of Newton, MA. The Harold L. Hazen Teaching Award was presented to Nicholas Laneman of Charles, MO. Frederick C. Hennie III Awards for Teaching Excellence went to Eric Lehman of Cambridge, MA, Jeremy Nimmer of Mequon, WI and Shamik Das of Kansas City, MO.
The Northern Telecom/BNR Project Award for the best 6.111 laboratory project (spring term 2000) was presented to Felix Klock, a graduate student from Glastonbury, CT and Roderick Gerguson, a senior from Pembroke, Bermuda. The same award for fall term 2000 was presented to Garrett Barter, a junior from Denver, CO and Nathaniel Sattler, a junior from Mequon, WI.
The George C. Newton Undergraduate Laboratory Prize for the best 6.115 project was presented to Nickolai Zeldovich, a senior from Orlando, FL.
Several graduate students won awards for their theses. The George M. Sprowls Award for Best PhD Thesis in Computer Science went to Cynthia Breazeal of Cambridge, MA, David Mazieres of Cambridge, MA, and Salil Vadhan of Oceanside, NY. The Morris Joseph Levin Award for Best MasterWorks Oral Thesis Presentation was presented to graduate students Alvar Saenz-Otero of San Jeronimo, Mexico; Jorge R. Nogueras of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, David Anderson of Salt Lake City, UT, Sidney Chang of Dix Hills, NY, Shelby Savage of Poquoson, VA, Colin Bulthaup of Longmont, CO, Samuel Schaevitz of San Rafael, CA, Maya Said of Damascus, Syria and Deepak Bansal of New Delhi, India.
The Charles and Jennifer Johnson Thesis Award was presented to graduate students Allison Waingold of York, PA and Aaron Ucko of Kansas City, MO. The William A. Martin Memorial Thesis Award went to Nicholas Feamster of Atherton CA. The David Adler Memorial Thesis Award was presented to Kevin O'Connor of Brentwood, NH and Stanley Hong of Sierra Madre, CA. The Ernst A. Guillemin Thesis Award went to Ozge Gozum of Istanbul, Turkey and Mr. Bulthaup.
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Special Recognition Award was presented to Professor Christopher Terman. The Louis D. Smulling Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to Professor Jesus del Alamo.
The Department Special Recognition Award in recognition of student contributions to subject development was presented to Warit Wichakool, a graduate student from Washington, DC, Robert W. Cox, a senior from Newark, DE, and David Robison, a graduate student from Sierra Madre, CA.
The Alton B. Zerby and Carl T. Koerner Outstanding Electrical Engineering Student Award for outstanding virtue of scholastic excellence and high moral character, coupled with demonstrated exemplary service to classmates, school and community, will be presented to William Thies, a graduate student from State College, PA. He also received the Anna Pogosyants UROP Award.
Sommer Gentry, a graduate student from Thousand Oaks, CA, received a four-year Krell Institute Computational Sciences Graduate Fellowship for her work on command and control systems.
