Four alumni awarded Bronze Beaver for their service

Four alumni received the Bronze Beaver award Saturday at the Alumni Leadership Conference awards luncheon in La Sala de Puerto Rico, among them Brian G.R. Hughes, the 1999-2000 president of the MIT Association of Alumni and Alumnae.

The award, the highest honor the Association bestows on any member, recognizes distinguished service to MIT and/or the Association. Counting this year's winner, 267 alumni have won the award since it was established in 1955.

Besides Mr. Hughes (SB 1977), the 2000 Bronze Beaver winners are Bruce A. Blomstrom (SB 1959), Hiroya Fujisaki (SM 1959) and Paula J. Olsiewski (SM 1979). Eighteen other alumni and six organizations received five other awards at the luncheon.

Prior to the luncheon, many of the 489 alumni, guest and staff at the conference attended a plenary session campus life, which included reports from Association officers. Alumni from 27 states and 13 countries attended.

On Saturday morning, MIT President Charles M. Vest, Provost Robert A. Brown, Chancellor Lawrence S. Bacow (SB 1972), Dean of Undergraduate Education Robert P. Redwine and Dean of Admissions Marilee Jones participated in a panel discussion. On Saturday afternoon, Professor Jesus Del Alamo of electrical engineering and computer science and several students discussed their Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) project, an online microelectronics laboratory.

About 200 alumni and guests celebrated the Association's 125th anniversary on Saturday night at Walker Memorial. Speakers included Association President Paul Rodovosky (SB 1966) and former presidents Joseph Gavin (SB 1941), Patty Wade (SB 1945) and Mr. Hughes.
