The Women's League is coordinating the Institute's participation in World AIDS Day (December 1) and is seeking volunteers to help.
World AIDS Day at MIT will include a display of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt and a chocolate buffet fundraiser in Lobby 10. In addition, the Health Education Service of MIT Medical, the Boston AIDS Action Committee and the Children's Hospital AIDS Program will have information tables set up. Several student organizations are expected to participate as well.
The chocolate buffet will feature chocolate desserts donated by local bakeries, hotels, restaurants, catering services and members of the MIT community. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance in Rm 10-342 or in Lobby 10 on the day of the event. All proceeds will be donated to the Children's Hospital AIDS Program to support care and research.
The Women's League, a social and service organization open to all women in the MIT community, needs volunteers to help pick up donated pastries, bake, sell buffet tickets and staff the buffet on December 1. December 1 was designated World AIDS Day in 1988 as a way to communicate messages of compassion, hope, solidarity and understanding about AIDS to every country. It is the result of the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programs for AIDS Prevention, which sought to open channels of communication, strengthen the exchange of information and experience, and forge a spirit of social tolerance. Since then, World AIDS Day has received the support of the World Health Assembly, the United Nations and governments, communities and individuals around the world. It remains the only international day of coordinated action against AIDS.
