Astronaut with most shuttle missions to visit alma mater

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Franklin Chang-Diaz, who has flown more space shuttle missions that any other astronaut, will visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Monday, Jan. 25.

Chang-Diaz received a doctorate in nuclear engineering from MIT in 1977. He will have lunch with physics students and visit former professors when he comes to the Institute.

Chang-Diaz, a mission specialist with NASA, will present a colloquium at 3 p.m. in Room 250 in Building 10. The title of his talk is "Technology Development of the VASIMR Propulsion System."

On his most recent mission, he was the specialist with responsibility for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment, a project led by Samuel Ting, a Nobel laureate and researcher at MIT's Laboratory for Nuclear Science.

Chang-Diaz also is director of the Advanced Space Propulsion Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center.
