Bates25 symposium to be held this week

The MIT Bates Linear Accelerator Center is planning a Bates25 Symposium to celebrate "25 years of beam to experiment."

The scientific symposium will be held on the MIT campus at the Bartos Theatre and will begin at 8:45am on Wednesday, November 3 and end on Friday night with a dinner dance at the Sheraton Ferncroft in Danvers. President Charles Vest will open the welcoming reception at the MIT Museum on Wednesday evening.

The scientific symposium will include a series of talks on electromagnetic nuclear physics, where Bates is today, and where the field is going. The emphasis of the symposium is to look forward. The co-chairs of the symposium are Dr. William Turchinetz, former Bates associate director, and Dr. T. William Donnelly, a research scientist in physics.

A reception and a tour of the Bates facility are planned for Friday, Nov. 5. The South Experimental Hall now has the Out-of-Plane-Spectrometer (OOPS) in place and construction has started on the Bates Large Acceptance Toroid (BLAST).

The cost of the symposium is $125 including the proceedings. The dinner dance is $30. To register, contact Ginny Bullard at x3-9231 or vbullard@mit.edu.
