Urban studies program marks 30th year with conference

The Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS) in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning is celebrating its 30th Anniversary on Friday, Oct. 30 at the Faculty Club with a one-day conference on "Human Development and Collective Action: Fresh Concerns and Opportunities."

The conference will convene key policy makers to review and reflect on current development needs and speculate about policies and interventions that will be called for over the next 30 years of global transformation, with a special focus on human development and collective action opportunities in developing countries. There will be a response to each speaker from a panel of MIT faculty.

SPURS is a one-year mid-career program of professionals largely from developing countries. In its three decades, it has hosted more than 400 men and women from 82 countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and eastern and central Europe. The current director of the program is Professor John de Monchaux.

All conference sessions are open to the adademic community at MIT and other universities. A limited number of students will be admitted for lunch; reservations are required. For more information, contact Nimfa Deleon at nvdeleon@mit.edu or x3-5915.
