Nuclear engineering honors seven students, two faculty

At its International Banquet held on April 30, the Department of Nuclear Engineering recognized two faculty members and seven students.

The Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching, given to acknowledge "the tradition of high quality engineering education at MIT" was awarded to Professor Kent F. Hansen. Associate Professor Jacquelyn C. Yanch received the American Nuclear Society MIT Student Chapter Outstanding Teaching Award.

Two graduate students were awarded Manson Benedict Fellowships for excellence in academic performance and professional promise in nuclear engineering. They are Damien G. Hicks from Ardmore Park, Singapore, and Roberto Accorsi from Milan, Italy.

The Sherman Knapp Fellowship (Northeast Utilities), an award given to an outstanding graduate student who is interested in a professional career in nuclear power engineering, was awarded to Michael P. Reynard of Chicago. Eric R. Empey, a senior from Hudson, NH, received the Roy Axford Award for academic achievement by a senior in nuclear engineering.

The Irving Kaplan Award for academic achievement by a junior in nuclear engineering was awarded to Marc V. Berte, a junior from Menomonee Falls, WI. The Outstanding Student Service Award in recognition of exceptional services to the students, the department and the entire MIT community went to Christopher S. Handwerk, a graduate student from Allentown, PA. The Outstanding TA Award in recognition of exceptional services to education by a teaching assistant was awarded to Jacopo Buongiorno, a graduate student from Milan, Italy.
