Dr. Donald Shaw, retired director of Texas Instruments (TI) Materials Science Laboratory, will present the 1998 Harry C. Gatos Distinguished Lecture at 4pm on Tuesday, Oct. 20 in Rm 34-101.
The lecture, "Materials Challenges in Ultra-large Scale Integration (ULSI) Technology," is sponsored by the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with support from Sumitomo Electric Industries, Inc. in Japan.
At the time of his retirement from TI in 1996, Dr. Shaw held the position of principal fellow, TI's highest technical position, and was director of the Materials Science Laboratory. A physical chemist, his research areas have included crystal growth and dissolution, kinetics of vapor phase epitaxial growth, materials for solid state microwave devices and preparation and properties of gallium arsenide.
Dr. Shaw was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1988, and has received awards including the Electrochemical Society's Electronics Division Award and the Heinrich Welker Gold Medal.
