The 1997 United Way campaign at MIT will be headed by campaign chair Travis Merritt, professor of literature and former dean for undergraduate academic affairs, and co-chair William Wohlfarth, senior electrical engineer in Physical Plant and a member of the United Way Steering Committee.
The 1997 campaign, which aims to raise $315,000 from the Institute community by December 31, began two weeks ago. As of November 4, the Office of Special Community Services (OSCS) had received 100 donations totaling $23,960, including five Leadership Givers pledging at least $1,000 apiece. Donations benefit social-service agencies serving 2.2 million people in eastern Massachusetts.
Packets containing a personalized pledge form, a 1997 contribution guide, a letter from the Steering Committee and a return envelope have been distributed to each employee in campus mail; they are also available from the OSCS in Rm 20A-023. Employees may give pledges to their area solicitor or send them directly to the OSCS. Call x3-7914 for more information.
