Professor Sherry Turkle will present a seminar on "The Impact of Computers on Children's Lives" on Thursday, May 1 from noon-1:30pm in Rm E19-758.
Sponsored by the MIT Family Resource Center, the seminar will explore the ways in which computers affect children's development, including the formation of a sense of identity. Both positive and negative effects will be covered, as well as a variety of computer activities such as educational software, multi-user domains and the World Wide Web. The question of what constitutes "computer literacy" will also be addressed.
Dr. Turkle is professor of the sociology of science in the Program in Science, Technology and Society and an internationally known scholar on the relationship between computers and human psychology. Her most recent books are The Second Self: Computers and the Human Spirit and Life on the Screen: Identity in the Age of the Internet.
