Athletics announces staff changes

Dr. Richard A. Hill, director of athletics, has announced staff changes within the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation.

Associate Professor Candace Royer, who was assistant to the department head for sports administration, has been promoted to associate department head and director of physical education. She replaces Associate Professor Gordon Kelly, who resigned as director of physical education to return to full-time teaching.

Associate Professor John Bene-dick, swimming and water polo coach for the past 23 years, has been promoted to assistant athletic director. He will assume many of the responsibilities formerly held by Ms. Royer. He will be assisted in matters of athletic compliance by Assistant Professor Cheryl Silva, field hockey and women's lacrosse coach.

Associate Professor Jean Heiney has been named senior women's administrator and intercollegiate scheduling coordinator. She assumes these duties in addition to her role as Athletic Department special events coordinator and her physical education teaching responsibilities.

Larry Anderson, the men's basketball coach and an assistant professor of physical education, will be assisting Ms. Royer as director of MIT's club sports program.

Assistant Professor Mayrene Earle, women's varsity crew coach, has been appointed to the newly created position of associate director of the Pierce Boathouse.

Wrestling coach Jim Carls assumes the position of assistant in the Office of Athletic Facilities and Operations. He will continue with his wrestling responsibilities. Cheryl Eccles, formerly of the Department of Biology, has been named administrative officer in the Athletic Business Office. Peter Charbonneau will serve as an intern in the Office of Sports Information. A graduate of Hofstra University, he has worked professionally at Newsday on Long Island.

In addition to the staff changes, several coaches and physical education instructors have been added to the Athletic Department staff.

Mary Ellen McLaughlin will replace Mr. Benedick as men's and women's swimming coach after holding a similar position at Middlebury College. Melissa Hart, formerly of Hamilton College, will head the women's basketball and women's soccer programs. Both will be instructors of physical education.

Jeff Ma (SB '94) moves from assistant men's water polo coach to head coach. Mac Singleton was promoted from part-time baseball coach to the full-time position of instructor of physical education and varsity baseball coach. Also returning to the coaching staff is Paul Dill, who was interim women's volleyball coach in 1996.

Ken Bellerose has been named varsity golf coach on a part-time basis. He is the golf pro at the Wellesley College course. Also joining the part-time staff is freshmen heavyweight crew coach Richard Branch. He also coaches the lightweight women's program at the Riverside Boat Club in Cambridge.

Richard MacKenzie is interim coach of men's cross-country and men's track and field. MacKenzie, who has served as an assistant to head coach Halston Taylor, will also teach physical education.
