CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--About 800 MIT student volunteers--mostly freshmen--will play host to 450 third- through sixth-graders from Cambridge elementary schools at the sixth annual CityDays Festival on Friday, August 29.
The day's activities, which run from 9am to 3pm on the MIT campus, will include science activities, arts and crafts and sports. Science activities will include touring the Media Laboratory, the MIT Museum and the Edgerton Center, where the children will view high speed video.
In addition, CityDays willoffer the children a chance to explore their creativity through such crafts as origami, kite-making and Rice Krispies sculpturing. There will also be athletic activities, including basketball, soccer, volleyball and 4-square.
During the day, each youngster will receive a free lunch, ice cream and a T-shirt.
Cambridge Mayor Shiela Russell and MIT President Charles M. Vest will set the tone for the day with opening remarks.
The CityDays Festival serves as a springboard for many community service events sponsored by the MIT Public Service Center throughout the year. Many of the MIT volunteers also participate in the LINKS program in which they work alongside science teachers with elementary school youngsters. The relationships developed through these programs can play an important role in the education of both the MIT students and the youngsters.
