Internationally acclaimed architect Fumihiko Maki will give the Third
Peitro Belluschi Lecture at MIT on the topic "Conception, Expression,
Construction." Professor Maki's museums, university campuses and
sports facilities are among the most successful of modern Japanese
public buildings and have played a major role in the emergence of the
international influence of Japanese architecture. His work abroad
includes the Yerba Buena Visual Arts Center in San Francisco.

"His work builds on modernist traditions in unexpected ways, producing
designs that are technologically sophisticated, sculpturally dramatic,
and responsive to their users and surroundings," said William Mitchell,
dean of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning.

Professor Maki is the winner of 1993 Pritzker Prize, (considered
architecture's Nobel) and the Gold Medal of the International Union of
Architects.
