Aron M. Bernstein, a professor of physics in the Laboratory for Nuclear Science, recently received the Humboldt Research Award for Senior American Scientists. This award is bestowed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation funded by the German government to promote international scientific cooperation and is granted on the basis of nominations by eminent German scholars. Professor Bernstein will visit the Universities of Bonn and Mainz. He joins Professor Ernest J. Moniz and Dr. T. William Donnelly of the LNS and physics as a recipient of the award.

A plan for new buildings and open spaces on the campus of the University of Southern California has won a citation from the Progressive Architecture Awards Program for Professor Michael Dennis and his company, Michael Dennis & Associates. The design was one of 11 selected from more than 500 entries in the competition. The jury cited the design for its replacement of a street with spaces for pedestrians and said it could serve as a model for other campuses, office parks and shopping centers.

Professor Alexander Klibanov of chemistry received the 1993 Biotechnology Divisional Lectureship Award from the Institute of Food Technologists for pioneering research on the unusual properties of enzymes in non-aqueous solvents. He delivered his award lecture at the association's annual meeting in the fall.

Jonathan K. Witter has been honored with the 10th annual Manuel Lujan Jr. Student Paper Award which recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of space nuclear power.
The award was presented January 10 at the annual Symposium on Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion held in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Witter, a PhD candidate in the Department of Nuclear Engineering when he wrote the paper, has graduated and is now with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Sharing in the honor were Professors John E. Meyer and David D. Lanning, his advisers and co-authors on the paper entitled Flow Stability Analyses of a Particle Bed Reactor Fuel Element.
Manuel Lujan Jr. is a former congressman from New Mexico and a long-time supporter of space exploration. He was secretary of the interior during the Bush administration.

The American Geophysical Union has selected Dr. Peter S. Eagleson, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering, to receive its 1994 William Bowie Medal. The AGU said Dr. Eagleson is being honored "for outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and for unselfish cooperation in research."

Three MIT students were honored at the fourth annual awards banquet of the Boston Chapter of the ARCS Foundation, Inc. They are Alice Song, a senior majoring in chemistry; Tammy L. Stoops, a junior majoring in nuclear engineering; and Susan D. Ward, a graduate student in mechanical engineering.
ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists), a national organization for women, provides scholarship funds to deserving students in the fields of natural science, medicine and engineering.

Dr. Herbert H. Richardson, former head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and associate dean of engineering at MIT, has been appointed director of the Texas Transportation Institute by the Texas A&M University System board of regents.
Dr. Richardson, regents professor and distinguished professor of engineering at Texas A&M University, has served as dean of engineering and chancellor of the TAMU system. He is an MIT alumnus, having received the SB, SM and ScD from the Institute.
