Dr. Jack L. Kerrebrock, Richard C. Maclaurin Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, has agreed to serve as chair of the Council on Family and Work at MIT, President Charles M. Vest announced Tuesday at the Academic Council.
Professor Kerrebrock's appointment fulfills a major recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee on Family and Work: the establishment of a council composed of representatives from all segments of the community. The charge from the committee said:
"The existing services in the Family and Work domain at MIT have to do largely with dependent care. Dependent care needs evolve with time. Their realistic assessment is a complex task that should continue. . . We recommend that a council be appointed which can track those needs, perform evaluations and make recommendations about dependent care and other family and work areas, creating a coherent and evolving MIT program of activities on family and work."
Stephen A. Fairfield, manager of the Office of Special Community Services in the Personnel Office, will serve as executive officer of the new Council.
President Vest said he hoped the Council's membership could be completed within the next few weeks and invited those with suggestions for members to submit them to Professor Kerrebrock, Rm 33-411; Mr. Fairfield, Rm 20A-023, or to Vice President Constantine B. Simonides, Rm 3-209.
