The kit, “uses modular blocks that can be connected in different patterns to replicate the function that would typically be built into a manufactured test for pregnancy, glucose, or an infection or other disease.”

MIT spinout Myomo has developed a robotic brace to aid in the reduction of neurological-related limb paralysis. “With the robotic brace, patients use their own muscle signals to control movements of a paretic or injured arm,” writes Jennifer Kite-Powell for Forbes. “[T]he brace amplifies their weak muscle signal to help move the limb.”

Empatica, a startup founded by Prof. Rosalind Picard, makes a wearable sensor that detects a person’s seizures, as well as certain physiological factors. Picard discussed the potential benefits of her work with Co.Design’s Katherine Schwab: “[W]hen you get personalized, long-term data from a watch or a phone, we can start to help an individual learn [their] patterns, not on average for some group you may be an outlier in.”

CBS Boston spotlights how Portal Instruments, an MIT startup, is bringing a needle-free injector to the market, which could change the way people take medicine. The device, “fires a pressurized spray to penetrate the skin, instead of piercing the skin with traditional needles.”

The device will use “body movement as a powerhouse to monitor and record what's happening inside us,” explains Brueck.

In an article for U.S. News & World Report about innovations for seniors, Teresa Mears reports that MIT researchers are developing a shirt that can sense a heart attack and administer CPR. While “such a shirt is [probably] 15 years away, shirts with sensors are already on the market, used primarily by athletes,” writes Mears.

Kalter explains that the study is part of a new collaboration between MIT and Philips and will “use data from an ultrasound machine taking measurements of blood pressure and flow.”

A team led by Prof. Michael Cima is developing an implantable sensor that can monitor a tumor’s response to cancer drugs, writes Eric Levenson for Boston.com. “The sensor would function like a long-term medical biopsy, giving doctors a continuous look at how a tumor is developing,” Levenson explains.

Jamie Ducharme writes for Boston Magazine that MIT researchers are developing a biochemical sensor that could provide updates on cancerous tumors. The sensor “could be implanted in cancerous tissue during a patient’s first biopsy. After that, it would stay in the tissue and transmit data about the state of the tumor to an external device.”

Graduate student Tristan Swedish has devised a concept for a device that allows patients to photograph their retinas, according to The Economist. Swedish hopes the device could allow, “people to monitor themselves and, if there are any warning signs, to be advised to see a doctor.”
