Wall Street Journal reporter Brian Gormley speaks with Dr. Leo Anthony Celi, a principal researcher scientist at IMES, who encourages hospitals to share electronic medical data on intensive care patients. “De-identified data from 60,000 such cases now are freely available in a database called Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care,” writes Gormley of Celi’s work. “Scientists regularly publish papers based on this repository.”
In an article for The Wall Street Journal about blockchain, Tomio Geron highlights MedRec, a system being developed by MIT researchers that would allow patients to manage their own medical records. “With MedRec, if a baby has been given vaccinations by different doctors,” reports Geron, “all of that information can be accessed from the blockchain.”
Lindsay Kalter writes for The Boston Herald about PicnicHealth, a California-based startup founded by MIT alumnus Troy Astorino that allows patients to store all their medical records in one spot. One day “patients will really have ownership of their own medical info and have it all in one place,” said Astorino.
