MIT researchers have developed an AI-powered robotic therapy system that combines wearable force sensors and camera recordings of physical therapists’ movements to provide personalized therapy to patients, writes Newsweek’s Claudia Tanner. “Robotic assistance will allow patients to practice exercises more often while still receiving support tailored to their abilities,” says Johannes Lachner, who completed this work as a postdoctoral fellow at MIT. “Our goal is to take a step toward more accessible and personalized physical rehabilitation, giving more patients the opportunity to regain movement and independence.”

MIT Media Lab researchers found that using large language models for writing assistance was associated with weaker recall and lower ownership of the work produced, writes Forbes’ Glenn Llopis. “Notice the pattern: when AI does too much, the person may retain too little,” writes Llopis.

A study by researchers from the MIT Media Lab found up to 55% lower neural connectivity in participants who used AI for writing assistance, and flagged children as especially vulnerable, writes Forbes’ Dana Williams. “83% of participants who used a chatbot could not quote a single sentence from an essay they had finished minutes earlier, versus roughly 11% of those who wrote unaided,” Williams notes. “The words were produced, but they never entered a mind.”

MIT researchers found that unless an individual is affected by stroke or dementia, their ability to process language does not decline with age, writes Health Day’s Dennis Thompson. “Scans show that activity in the brain’s language processing network is nearly identical among seniors to that found in younger adults,” writes Thompson. “These results indicate that parts of the brain dedicated to unique functions like language might be less prone to age-related decline than general-purpose networks that contribute to many different skills.”

The New York Times’ Dana Goldstein highlights an MIT study that found individuals who used AI for writing assistance recorded lower brain activity than those who worked without LLMs. “The writers who used AI struggled to remember what, exactly, they had written, and felt little ownership over their work,” writes Goldstein. “The findings join a growing body of research suggesting that frequent AI use can degrade critical thinking.”

By analyzing brain scans from 772 people, MIT researchers have identified 17 additional language-responsive regions in the brain, reports The Dallas Express (DX). “For decades, scientists have focused on regions such as Broca’s area and areas of the left frontal and temporal lobes as the brain’s primary language-processing centers,” writes DX. “The new study found that language-responsive regions are also located in other parts of the brain, including the cerebellum, hippocampus, amygdala, medial frontal cortex, and temporal lobe.”

Prof. Joshua Tenenbaum discusses whether AI systems will perform better if they have increased awareness of the world around them with New Scientist’s Daniel Cossins. “One of the big misconceptions is that intelligence is a single thing, that there is a single world model in the brain,” says Tenenbaum. “What we actually have is the ability to run many different models depending on the context, task and goal.”

Researchers from MIT, Harvard and Yale have found “that people who meditate regularly show measurable increases in brain thickness in areas responsible for attention and sensory processing,” reports Luis Prada for Vice. “The research team plans larger studies to track changes over time and explore how meditation might influence neural connections and cognitive aging,” writes Prada.

Chronicle reporter Jon Rineman spotlights Prof. Li-Huei Tsai’s work researching how stimulation via light and sound could one day potentially be used to help fight Alzheimer’s disease. “People who continued with this treatment, their memory capacity really has been maintained at a steady state level,” explains Tsai. “And in a couple of patients, their Alzheimer’s biomarkers actually significantly reduced.”

A new study by researchers at MIT and elsewhere has found a correlation between addiction and eye care, reports Hadley Barndollar for MassLive. “The study found nearly half of the patients with opioid use disorder being treated for the eye infection were eligible to initiate medication-assisted treatment,” explains Barndollar. “But medications were only initiated when an addiction consult occurred, highlighting how much more eye doctors responding to emergency rooms can offer patients beyond vision care.”
