The Boston Globe

MIT researchers have discovered that carefully timed bursts of ‘pink noise’ strengthened the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which clear waste from the brain, during sleep, writes reporter Sarah Rahal for The Boston Globe. “It’s very important for us to test: Does this work in people who may be either much older or who may be showing signs of the beginnings of a neurological disorder,” says Prof. Laura Lewis.

Cailin Plunkett speaks to the Scientific American’s Mary Randolph about her research discovering that 14% of black holes may be hierarchical mergers, made from the merger of two smaller black holes. “At minimum, we’re finding evidence that there are these highly spinning and weirdly tilted black holes in the dataset, and the most straightforward way to interpret that, the Occam’s razor answer, is that these black holes probably came from previous mergers,” says Plunkett.

Prof. Daron Acemoglu discusses the impact of AI models on jobs in an article by CNBC’s Trevor Laurence Jockims. “If AI continues to be developed as an automation technology, there will be more impacts. Right now, we don’t have many easy-to-use applications relevant for a large number of tasks/industries,” says Acemoglu. “Once these are developed, the labor market effects will be multiplied.”

Prof. Max Tegmark joins David Gura and Christina Ruffini, hosts of “Bloomberg This Weekend,” to discuss briefing the U.S Senate on regulating AI, in wake of recent reports of rogue agents. “I want to emphasize for anyone who gets stressed by this, that this dystopian future where we build smarter than human AIs and robots, super intelligence, and then they take over Earth, is not at all inevitable,” says Tegmark.

MIT ranks No. 1 in Forbes’ list of America’s top colleges. “The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is known for its innovative discoveries in science, research and technology,” writes Forbes. “Just 7% of MIT’s students take out any federal loans, due in part to the university’s generous financial aid,” which allows students from families with income below $200,00 to attend tuition-free. “MIT also ranks at the top of Forbes’ alumni earnings ranking.”  

The Wall Street Journal

For The Wall Street Journal, reporter Jennifer Hiller spotlights Xcimer Energy, a fusion startup that is developing technology to defend against drones and other threats, founded by alumni Conner Galloway M.S. ‘09 and Alexander Valys ‘08. “We realized that no one was actually pursuing the approach to fusion that we thought was going to work, and so ultimately that’s what led to Xcimer,” says Valys.  

Yahoo Finance

President Emeritus L. Rafael Reif joins Yahoo Finance’s Julie Hyman to discuss how new policies regarding student visas, coupled with cuts to federal funding for universities, are severely disrupting America’s innovation economy. “The whole innovation ecosystem we have in America has been the best since World War II and has created this tremendous economy for the country. A great deal of that economy has to do with federal funding of research, doing it in a nonpoliticized way, and having the best people come from other countries to America to study with us, and to learn with us,” says Reif. “All of that ecosystem is being affected, and that makes it very uncomfortable for the experts who came here, to be here, to study here, and to stay here.”

Akamai will honor their late cofounder Danny Lewin SM ’98, a victim of the American Airlines Flight 11 on 9/11, by illuminating their headquarters in blue the evening of Sept. 11, write Jon Chesto and Shirley Leung for The Boston Globe. “Lewin remains revered at Akamai; its highest employee award is given out each year in his honor,” Chesto and Leung write.

Prof. Anette “Peko” Hosoi, co-founder of the MIT Sports Lab, and Andrew Byron, assistant coach for the MIT Football team, join Edgar B. Herwick III, host of GBH’s “The Curiosity Desk,” to discuss athletic intelligence and football IQ. “One of the special things about football is that it’s an incredibly complicated game compared to other games because there are very specialized positions,” says Hosoi. “Everybody has a very special role and there are a lot of players on the field at once.”

Prof. Sherry Turkle speaks to Scientific American’s Brianne Kane about her forthcoming book, “Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines.” “Social media got us into the attention economy, but chatbots are more toxic because they’re coming after the attachment economy,” says Turkle. “They’re coming after who you think you love, who you think you can count on, what you think empathy is.”
