The Office of the Secretary of Defense has recently announced that Eric D. Evans, Director of MIT Lincoln Laboratory, has been appointed as Vice Chair of the Defense Science Board (DSB). Dr. Evans has been a member of the DSB since 2009, where he has served on several studies, including as co-lead of DSB Task Forces on Improvised Explosive Devices, and Cyber Security and Resilience in a Digital Cloud. The DSB, founded in 1956, is composed of leading U.S. scientists and engineers who provide the Department of Defense independent input on science and technology issues. Recent DSB Task Forces have included Technology and Innovation Enablers for Superiority in 2030 and Basic Research, an investigation of long-term basic research investment needs.
Dr. Evans is responsible for MIT Lincoln Laboratory's strategic direction and overall technical and administrative operations. The Laboratory focuses on advanced technology development and system prototyping for national security needs. Laboratory sponsored programs include research and development for the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Laboratory has 3,750 employees whose backgrounds include electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, and biology.
Dr. Evans is also an advisor to the U.S. Strategic Command Senior Advisory Group, a member of the Massport Security Advisory Council, and President of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
