MIT Executive Vice President and Treasurer Theresa M. Stone announced today the appointment of Israel Ruiz, currently the Institute's director of finance, as vice president for finance, effective July 1.

Ruiz "brings to all his work both analytical talent and a keen insight into the financial aspects of MIT and has a well-deserved reputation for partnering effectively with members of the Institute community," Stone wrote in an e-mail to MIT faculty and staff.

Ruiz's appointment is one of a number of changes affecting MIT's senior financial team. Controller James L. Morgan will relinquish that role after 11 years at the end of July to concentrate on some of his other areas of responsibility, focusing primarily on advising MIT faculty on the tax, accounting and other financial arrangements for their international and other research and educational ventures.

Director of Budget Operations Margaret A. Warner will reduce her commitment to part-time after the end of July in anticipation of retirement toward the end of 2007.

"It is an honor and a privilege to have been chosen to serve MIT in this expanded, integrative role," Ruiz said. "I look forward to collaborating with all members of the MIT community in order to more effectively serve MIT's academic and research endeavors."

As director of finance, Ruiz has advised MIT's senior administration on financial matters and has a leadership role in the financial aspects of institutional planning and analysis. In his new role, he will work with Stone to create an integrated finance organization to include finance, budget, controller's and treasury functions.

"The new, integrated finance organization will provide the ideal platform to develop and grow the financial capabilities necessary for tackling the challenges and seizing the opportunities of the 21st century," Ruiz said.

Ruiz joined MIT in 2001 as manager of financial planning and analysis, and he was appointed director of finance in 2005. Previously, he worked for Hewlett-Packard in Europe for five years, with stints in Singapore and the United States.

A native of Spain, Ruiz holds a master's degree from MIT's Sloan School of Management and earned a degree in engineering from the Polytechnic University of Barcelona in 1995. He serves on the board of directors of the MIT Press.
