NASA astronaut Pamela Melroy (S.M. 1984) leads the crew of the Atlantis space shuttle mission STS-112 out to the launch pad on Oct. 7. Melroy was the first MIT alumna to pilot an American spacecraft during her first space mission two years ago (see MIT Tech Talk, Oct. 18, 2000). The recent flight, which returned to Earth on Oct. 18, delivered a section of truss structure to the International Space Station now under construction.
