Provost Robert A. Brown has announced that Philip S. Khoury has been appointed the first Kenan Sahin Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences , effective immediately. Khoury has served as dean of the school since 1991 and has also held an appointment in the history faculty since 1981. He is a specialist in Middle East history.

The endowment of the dean's position was one of the intended uses of the Kenan Sahin Fund for the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, established in 2000 as part of Dr. Sahin's gift of $100 million to the Institute. Other planned uses of the fund include creating distinguished professorships and graduate fellowships in the school.

Sahin earned his bachelor's degree in 1963 and his Ph.D. in 1969 from MIT, and taught in the Sloan School's Senior Executive Program from 1969-82.

He started Consultants for Management Decisions Inc. in 1982, which in 1991 became Kenan Systems Corp., then became a division of Lucent Technologies in 1999. Sahin stayed on as president of Kenan Systems until December 2000, and was vice president for software technology at Bell Labs until that time. He is a member of the MIT Corporation and serves on its Humanities Visiting Committee.
