MIT's staff artists emerge from behind their desks to perform

From desk set to stage set, MIT's "Artists Behind the Desk" are preparing for their days in the sun.

The Artists Behind the Desk Summer 2000 series of outdoor performances kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 9 with original rock and roll performed by Mascara. The band is led by Chris Mascara, who works part time for Professor Nicholas A. Ashford in the Technology and Law Program at the Center for Technology, Policy and Industrial Development.

The series continues on Wednesday, Aug. 16 with Happy the Clown and his "Muzak for the Next Generation." Happy the Clown, otherwise known as Steve Muccini, is a mail processor in the Department of Facilities.

On Wednesday, Aug. 23, Jump City, featuring Kip Bruggeman, Institute copier program manager at the Copy Technology Center will perform "rockin' jump blues."

City of Roses, featuring Stephen Gilligan, analyst programmer with the Office of Development Research and Systems, will perform a mix of folk/rock/pop/country/blues on Thursday, Aug. 31.

The MIT Artists Behind the Desk Series, which originated in 1987, is a standing committee of the Working Group on Support Staff Issues, showcasing the creative talent of support staff at MIT in the visual, literary and performing arts. More information can be found at the group's web site.

All performances are from 12-1pm on the Stratton Student Center Pavilion.
