The annual United Way bake sale last Friday raised $856 for the United Way -- almost twice the $456 total for last year's event.
The bake sale raised money for MIT's United Way campaign -- which has collected $224,670 as of December 14 -- through sale of items made by members of the MIT community or donated by MIT Catering, Laverde's, Star Market, Michaelangelo's, Patsy's
Pastry Shop, Rebecca's Cafe, Carberry's Bakery and Cafe, Alden Merrill and Commonwealth Distributors.
Members of the MIT community who would like to donate to the United Way but have not yet done so are reminded that the campaign ends December 31, and they should return their pledge forms as soon as possible. Forms can be sent to department solicitors or mailed directly to MIT's United Way headquarters in Rm 50-005. Anyone with questions may call Liz Mulcahy or Annmarie Cameron at x3-7914.
The Institute's campaign now stands at 70 percent of its $322,000 goal. Sixty of the 956 donors thus far are Leadership Givers, contributing at least $1,000 apiece.
The growing roster of raffle prizes that donors may win is up to 13, including overnight stays for two at six area hotels, five pairs of tickets to musical and theatrical performances, a $50 American Express gift cheque and four day passes to Riverside Park in Agawam. Everyone at MIT who contributes to the United Way is automatically entered in the drawing, which will be held in February.
The campaign will continue to collect donated clothing and other items for CASPAR, the Salvation Army and Shelter, Inc. in Cambridge. "Thanks to the MIT community for their support. The clothing drive has been an overwhelming success so far," said Ms. Mulcahy, MIT's employee campaign manager.
