MIT holding silent vigil at noon Friday in memory of Matthew Shepard

MIT students, faculty and staff will hold a silent vigil on its main steps at noon Friday in memory of Matthew Shepard, the gay University of Wyoming student who was beaten to death. The vigil on the steps of 77 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge will be from 12 noon to 12:30 PM on Friday, Oct. 16.

People will be encouraged to stand quietly to demonstrate their concern, both for his death and for anti-gay incidents everywhere. A microphone will be available for those who wish to read poetry or otherwise respectfully honor him. There will be a large card for his family for people to sign.

In case of heavy rain, it will be inside the building at the entrance lobby.
