Architecture presents awards and fellowships

The Department of Architecture presented prizes, fellowships and other awards to 38 students in the department.

AIA awards went to three Masters in Architecture degree candidates. The AIA Medal was presented to Scott Tulay of Northampton, MA. AIA Certificates of Merit went to Robert Clocker of Moraga, CA, and Melanie Coo of Colts Neck, NJ.

The Caminos Memorial Fund Award for students concerned with Third World and First World issues was given to Kristin Little, a graduate student from Berkeley, CA.

The William Everett Chamberlain Prize, given to graduating seniors for achievement in design, went to Javorka Saracevic of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Lin-Ann Ching of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.

The Francis Ward Chandler Prize, given to outstanding Master of Architecture degree candidates for achievement in architectural design, was given to Wolfgang Ungerer of Bonn, Germany, and Rodney Ziesemann of Trumbull, CT. Nana Last, a graduate student from Cambridge, MA, won the Kristen Ellen Finnegan Memorial Fund Award. The Faculty Design Award for excellence in architectural design went to seniors Laura Bouwman of East-pointe, MI, and Isaac Persley of Georgetown, KY.

The Alpha Rho Chi Medal, given by the national professional fraternity of architecture award to graduating students for service, leadership and promise of professional merit, went to Lana Yoon, a graduate student from Potomac, MD.

Marvin E. Goody Awards, given for promise of excellence in a master's thesis in the building arts, were presented to graduate students Gary Rohrbacher of Exeter, NH; Bryant Yeh of Honolulu, HI; Greg Russell of Somerville, MA; and Joel Turkel of Williams Lake, BC, Canada.

Graduate students Talin Der Grigorian of La Ca���ada, CA, Kevin Fellingham of Bryanston, South Africa, and Mr. Yeh received the Master of Science in Architecture Studies Prize for outstanding graduating students in that degree program. The Department Award for Advanced Research went to Carla Keyvanian, a graduate student from Selvazzano Dentro, Italy.

The Tucker Voss Award, given to an honors student who shows particular promise in the field of building construction, went to Eric Nelson, a graduate student from Boston.

Scott Tulay and Rodney Ziese-mann won Imre Halasz Thesis Awards, given for theses demonstrating excellence in architecture that best addresses issues of designing communities of buildings for rapidly developing environments.

The Sydney B. Karofsky '37 Prize, given to outstanding Masters of Architecture degree candidates with one further year of study, went to Benjamin Kou of Cambridge and Mr. Turkel.

Max Chen, a junior from Irvine, CA, won the Robert Bradford Newman Medal for Merit in Architectural Acoustics.

A number of students also won research fellowships and other grants. The Louis C. Rosenberg Travel Award went to Li Lian Tan, a graduate student from Singapore. Schlossman Research Fellowships for research on contemporary issues in architecture was given to Nilay Oza, a graduate student from Noida, India, and Hadas Steiner, a graduate student from Cambridge.

Skidmore Owings and Merrill Foundation Urban Design Traveling Fellowships went to Kevin Fellingham and Frank Valdes, a graduate student from Union City, NJ. The foundation's Traveling Fellowship in Mechanical/Electrical Building Systems Engineering was won by Andrea Whitsell, a graduate student from Gallatin, TN, the inaugural winner of this national award in building systems.

The New England Society of Architectural Historians Travel Award was given to Thomas Beischer, a graduate student from Durham, NC. A fellowship from the MIT-based Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology went to Edward Eigen, a graduate student from New York, NY. Panayiota Pyla, a graduate student from Larnaca, Cyprus, won a College Art Association travel grant. Birgul Colakoglu, a graduate student from Istanbul, Turkey, received an Aga Khan Program summer travel grant. The Ann Macy Beha Travel Award went to Rebecca Berry, a graduate student from Arlington, VA.

Irene Fatsea, a graduate student from Athens, Greece, won a Gerondelis Foundation graduate scholarship grant.

Sarah Whiting, a graduate student from Evanston, IL, won a Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship. Ritu Bhatt, a graduate student from Jaipur, India, won a Henry Broomfield Rogers Fellowship. A Social Science Research Council grant went to Brian McLaren, a graduate student from Ottawa, Ontario. Mr. McLaren also won a Fulbright Fellowship.

A Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship from the University of Illinois was given to Hadas Steiner, a graduate student from Cambridge, MA. Adnan Morshed, a graduate student from Chittigong, Bangladesh, won a Hyzen Pre-Dissertation Research Award.
