MIT frat bans alcohol after BU student incident; MIT student disciplined

An MIT fraternity stated today that, effective immediately, it will ban alcohol from its premises where a 17-year-old BU woman student became intoxicated on Halloween and was hospitalized briefly.

The fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, at 155 Bay State Road, Boston, said it will be alcohol-free pending review of the situation by the Office of the Dean for Students and Undergraduate Education and the Interfraternity Council. The fraternity was cited yesterday by Boston Police for a license violation in serving alcohol to a minor on the night of October 31-November 1.

The Dean's Office also has taken disciplinary action against a 21-year-old senior who had been issued an "MIT Alcohol Incident Citation" by MIT Police for providing alcohol to a minor.

Dean Rosalind Williams said, "The individuals and the group involved will now deal with the consequences of their behavior.

"It is commendable that other students sought and obtained help for that student from Boston Emergency Medical Services and MIT Police," Dean Williams said. The young woman was taken by city ambulance to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after 1 a.m. and she was released at 7:30 the next morning.

Dean Williams noted that MIT Police immediately contacted BU Police and asked them also to go to the house, which is near BU buildings. MIT officials also later contacted the Boston Licensing Board and the BU dean's office.

The young woman arrived at AEPi shortly after 10:30pm Saturday, friends said. When Campus Police arrived, they said she was on the floor, alert and conscious. They said her breath smelled of alcohol, her eyes were red and her speech was slurred.

The BU student takes a medication that may have contributed to her condition, friends told Campus Police.
