Gallop to head Chamber

Sarah E. Gallop, assistant for government and community relations in MIT's Office of Government and Community Relations, was elected chair of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce on January 23.

Ms. Gallop's duties during her two-year term will include guiding activities to promote economic development and the work of the High Tech/Bio-tech, Women in Business, Small Business, and Government and Community Affairs Committees. The Chamber has 1,300 member businesses and strives to make Cambridge an attractive place to live, work, study and do business.

Ms. Gallop has been in the President's Office since 1990 and has served on the Chamber of Commerce board since 1991. She is the second member of the MIT community to hold the Chamber's chair; the first was Walter L. Milne, former assistant to the president and assistant to the chairman of MIT. He served as chair from 1979-80 and retired from MIT in 1990.

"It will be critical for me to develop and maintain a keen understanding of the business interests and ideas of our members at large, so that we can work to sustain and enhance the economic viability of this healthy city," Ms. Gallop said.
