The Emile Bustani Middle East Seminar at MIT will celebrate its 13th anniversary this fall with three lectures on contemporary Middle Eastern affairs, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Professor John Waterbury of Princeton University, president-elect of the American University of Beirut, will lecture on "The Shape of Water Wars to come in the Middle East" on September 30. The second lecture in the series on October 28 will feature Professor Moshe Maoz of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem speaking on "The Arab-Israeli Peace Process: Where is it Headed?" Professor Chibli Mallat of the University of Saint Joseph in Beirut will deliver the November 18 lecture entitled "An Arab Maverick from Lebanon: Kamal Jumblatt's Life and Works."
The Seminar is funded by the Bustani family of Beirut in memory of the late Emile M. Bustani, who received the SB in civil engineering in 1933, and is sponsored by the Center for International Studies.
"Mr. Bustani was one of the Middle East's most prominent businessmen and philanthropists until his premature death in 1963," said Professor Philip S. Khoury, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science and chair of the Bustani Seminar. "He was the founder and chairman of the Contracting and Trading Co., a leading construction and engineering firm with projects in the Middle East, Africa and the Far East."
