Clinton names Sharp to cancer advisory panel

President Clinton announced on Monday his intention to appoint Professor Phillip A. Sharp to the National Cancer Advisory Board.

The National Cancer Advisory Board was created in 1971 to advise and assist the Director of the National Cancer Institute with respect to the National Cancer Program. Each year, the Board submits a report to the President for transmission to the Congress on the progress of the National Cancer Program. Support for the Board is provided by the National Cancer Institute.

Professor Sharp, a Nobel laureate and head of the Department of Biology, does his research at the Center for Cancer Research. He has served as a member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology since October 19, 1994. He was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993.

He is currently a trustee of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and serves as chair of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation Awards Assembly. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society for Microbiology, among others, and is the author of more than 270 publications pertaining to cancer research.
